Environmental Sustainability

Contributing to a decarbonised, resource-efficient society.

Building a More Sustainable Future

At Hitachi Solutions, we believe that how we operate is just as important as what we deliver. Our Environmental pillar reflects our commitment to reducing our impact on the planet.

Through the way we run our business, the solutions we build for our customers, and the partnerships we invest in. We’re working toward a future where economic growth and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.

Our Promise

We are committed to reaching Carbon Neutrality at all our sites by 2030, and Net Zero across our entire value chain by 2050.

Goal 1: A Decarbonised Society

We will reduce greenhouse gas emissions across our operations and supply chain to achieve net zero.

Hitachi Group has received approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for our carbon reduction plan, which includes a 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions against our 2010 baseline. Our carbon footprint is independently validated by an external agency, and we publish a clear, up-to-date Decarbonisation Strategy that outlines the steps we are taking to meet our 2030 goal.

How we support this goal

Greener Solutions for our customers: Sustainability is built into our project delivery from the outset. We work with customers to establish emissions baselines, set ambitious reduction targets, and design low-carbon technology solutions. All our solutions are delivered on the Microsoft Cloud, which is committed to using 100% renewable energy. Our teams follow the Well-Architected Framework to ensure efficient, lean solution design that reduces unnecessary compute and energy use.

Sustainable delivery practices: We encourage hybrid and remote working across our workforce, significantly reducing commuting-related emissions. We support our consultants to achieve certification from the ‘Green Software Foundation’, embedding sustainable software principles into how we work every day.

Operational activities linked to carbon reduction: We actively invest in verified carbon removal projects, including the Delta Blue Carbon project in Pakistan and the Future Forest Company Wetland Restoration project in the UK, chosen for their combined impact on carbon removal and biodiversity.

Goal 2: Resource Efficiency

We embrace circular economy principles to minimise waste and maximise the value of resources.

Hitachi Solutions is committed to procuring sustainable equipment wherever possible. At the end of a device’s lease period, we extend its life by donating hardware, such as laptops, to non-profit organisations, or recycling it through approved WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) schemes.

How we support this goal:

Hardware replacement and lifecycle management: When refreshing our IT equipment, we prioritise responsible disposal and device reuse. Laptops and hardware are passed to charitable organisations instead of recycling, ensuring maximum social and environmental value.

Office recycling and waste reduction: We operate recycling and waste reduction programmes across our offices, reducing the volume of waste sent to landfill and supporting our commitment to a circular economy.

Growing Together: Trees and Biodiversity: Our Growing Together anniversary programme celebrates every year an employee is with us by planting a tree in their honour. In partnership with Ecologi, we have planted over 35,732 trees to date and actively fund biodiversity and habitat restoration projects around the world.

GDSA: We are proud members of the Government Digital Sustainability Alliance (GDSA), working alongside industry partners to drive positive change in digital and ICT sustainability.
