As part of Hitachi, Ltd. which includes over 853 companies worldwide, Hitachi Solutions is dedicated to supporting our parent company’s Environmental, Societal, and Governmental (ESG) efforts through our own sustainability initiatives and efforts which cover a wide range of internal and external projects.

At Hitachi Solutions, we are dedicated to achieving Carbon Neutrality at all our sites by 2030 and reaching Net Zero across our entire value chain by 2050. Our carbon footprint is externally validated, and we are actively implementing a science-based reduction plan to ensure these goals are met.

Our Sustainability Approach

Our approach to sustainability is set out in 3 pillars:

Hitachi Solutions is committed to reaching Net Zero by 2050, with a key goal of achieving carbon neutrality at all our sites by 2030. Approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), this plan includes a 50% reduction in emissions (Scope 1 & 2) compared to our 2010 baseline. We’ve recently updated our carbon reduction plan and had our carbon footprint validated by an external agency. This plan sets clear targets and outlines the steps we’ll take to meet our 2030 goal.

Resource efficiency

Hitachi Solutions is committed to supporting the circular economy, ensuring that we procure sustainable equipment wherever possible and once at the end of its lease period we extend the use of tools such as laptops and pass them on to other organisations (non-profits) or recycle them using approved ‘WEEE’ schemes.

A harmonised society with nature.

Hitachi Solutions is committed to Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and we actively contribute to projects financially and through our employee volunteering scheme to make a difference in the countries where we and our customers operate. We have a long-standing tree planting programme with our partner Ecologi and have invested in projects that combine carbon removal, biodiversity and social value such as the Delta Blue Carbon project in Pakistan and the Future Forest Company Wetland Restoration project in the UK.

Our Sustainability Initiatives

As a global Microsoft solution integrator who is passionate about business transformation, we prioritise internal and external initiatives and partnerships that help us strive for a positive environmental impact.

We also believe that sustainability should be woven into the essence of who we are including our people, processes, business applications, and technologies. Focusing not just on delivering financial outcomes but having positive sustainable impact as an organisation.

Our People

At Hitachi Solutions Europe we encourage and support a hybrid workforce, encouraging our employees to work from home to minimise unnecessary commuting. This initiative enhances work-life balance and productivity while significantly reducing our carbon footprint by lowering transportation emissions. By embracing remote working, we actively contribute to environmental sustainability, reinforcing our commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.

To embed the principles of sustainable software into our ways of working , we provide training for all our consultants (both technical and delivery) to be certified with the Green Software Foundation’s Green Software for Practitioners exam.

We also encourage all our employees to use up to 5 days a year for volunteering work which many have utilised, supporting environmental causes.

Our Process

Sustainability is a core Hitachi Solutions value, and we work closely with our customers to help them achieve their own environmental goals.  This means considering our solution sustainability as a priority from the outset, establishing a baseline for emissions and setting ambitious targets. We work collaboratively as one team, sharing insights and addressing risks to align our goals and make a positive difference.

We aim to deliver low carbon projects and this requires a close partnership to minimise our programme’s impacts. To offset any remaining emissions, we invest in ‘Verified Carbon’ standard projects for carbon removal,  choosing projects for their positive impact on biodiversity.

Our Technology

All our solutions are delivered using the Microsoft cloud, which has strong sustainability standards including the pledge to use 100% renewable energy by 2025.

Our teams also follow the “Well Architected Framework” in our solution design, incorporating a lean, user-centric design methodology. Our approach helps ensure our solutions support efficient business processes that deliver automation and Improve productivity, resulting in an overall positive impact on sustainability.

Working together

Our work with environmentally conscious organisations like the Environment Agency (EA) and Plastic Energy exemplifies our commitment to using Microsoft technology to better our society.

We have collaborated with Plastic Energy, a global leader in its field, specialising in advanced recycling technologies, specifically focused on converting end-of-life plastic waste into valuable high-grade resources, implementing Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance to help them make better data-driven decisions and support their desire to address the global plastic waste problem by providing innovative and sustainable solutions.

Similarly, data is a crucial element of EA’s sustainability work. Hitachi Solutions has assisted EA in modernising its outdated systems by leveraging Microsoft Cloud technologies. This modernisation enhances EA’s data collection and use, enabling it to operate more effectively. As a result, EA can better pursue its environmental goals, helping people and wildlife adapt to climate change while reducing its impacts.

At Hitachi Solutions, we are committed to further developing initiatives like these, with sustainability at the forefront of all future projects.
